During rehab, it can be stressful to maintain a clear mind, and it can be difficult to stay sober in the face of temptation. Additionally, most users experience these problems on top of stress related to work and family. However, while recovery may seem insurmountable, it is possible with the right help.

How to Deal with Obstacles During Addiction Recovery

The answer to overcoming obstacles lies in planning and breaking things down into smaller parts. The old recovery adage states “one day at a time.” Sometimes, a moment is so difficult that you may even say “one hour” or “one minute at a time.”

When a task seems too difficult to approach, or when the problem seems hopeless, then eliminate just one element of the problem at a time. Take challenges one step at a time to see a different perspective. In other words, do not focus on the long-term goal of staying clean forever, but focus on how you can stay clean for the immediate future.

Recovery and Goal-Reaching Happens One Step at a Time

To approach long-term goals, think in terms of short-term milestones; in other words, rather than approaching recovery as a whole, break it down in to smaller, more manageable pieces. For example, consider the goal of finding your dream job: instead of starting out trying to find that job, craft an attractive and meaningful resume that will catch people’s eye. Allow yourself some praise and give yourself some credit for working toward your goals.

Instead of trying to make great progress in abstract goals, focus on straightforward, concrete efforts. By doing so, you will begin a chain of actions that lead directly to long-term goals. Instead of trying to dig out a new river yourself, let preexisting ones carry you where you need to go.

Once you have broken large issues down into more manageable parts, most of your problems will be easier to approach. In fact, you may find that accomplishing a long-term goal is determined by a series of short-term successes. While planning and looking ahead are important aspects of addiction recovery, it is also important to recognize that you exist in this moment alone. The future is only an idea, but addiction recovery requires you to stay in the present moment, so what you do now is what counts. Do not fret, just take life one step at a time.
